Social Media's Unspoken Rule

The Founder of Popflex, Cassey Ho, recently figured out that TikTok suppresses content if you mention the word YouTube or any other competitor like Instagram.

If you edit the word to say "YT", then it goes viral as usual.

Same video with 1 simple change got her 3.7 million views.

She tried a similar experiment with another video in which she mentions Instagram and YouTube multiple times in the video to see if the theory was actually true.

The results:

• TikTok - 3k views in 16 hours

• Instagram - 1.5 million views in 13 hours

There's a whole host of things people don't say on TikTok for this very reason. They use alternatives:

1. YouTube = YT or The Red Site

2. Twitch = The Purple App

3. Dead/Killed = Unalived

4. Can't say "link in bio" =⛓️🔗

The woman in this video covers the whole screen the entire time. It looks TikTok's Algorithm does OCR to read text on the video itself to suppress the video.

TikTok wants people to stay on the app so they are suppressing videos that redirect traffic to other places.

And there is an entire collection provided by TikTok itself through the Discover page if you search Google for "TikTok banned words list 2024".

Elon Musk's X is suppressing the same thing.

You get fewer views on X if you mention Substack, TikTok, Mastodon, Threads, or other competitor apps. Even providing a link to a website suppresses your reach.

So creators are coming up with creative ideas of using [email protected] and [email protected] to link to TikTok accounts.

All in all, Social Media is becoming a gated-garden.

Look for these words and avoid them if you are getting less reach on individual posts. Sometimes its not the quality of your content but the platforms suppression algorithms working against you.
