Gumroad SEO Ranking Factors
Best way to succeed on any platform is to reverse engineer the platform's algorithm and then consistently perform the actions they are rewarding.
Remember, the smaller the platform, the easier it is to manipulate the algorithm.
Google is a massive multi-billion dollar industry so it is harder to manipulate it.
Comparatively, smaller platforms like Gumroad are easier to manipulate in rankings.
To write complex algorithm, you have to spend a lot of engineering resources and nobody at a smaller company is tweaking their algorithms constantly when they could be focused on gaining more distribution and making more money.
Gumroad is like that. A smaller company ($8.9 million in 2023) when compared to Google ($305 billion in 2023), the search engine behemoth.
1. Relevant Keywords
When you type a keyword (like social media you want to rank on, Gumroad shows you related keywords that you can use.
For example, "social media" shows 2 categories "Marketing & Social" plus "Marketing & Sales".

And it shows related keywords on the left sidebar if you scroll a bit.

If you know a bit about SEO or have done it with Google, this is kind of similar. Just like we know when someone talks about "see" and "sea", one of them is related to eyes and another one is related to the ocean.
All Search Algorithms perform what is known as Vector Search. Or they just use a simple list of synonyms that are related to each other to rank it easy. Once you nail those keywords, your chances of ranking go higher.

2. Reviews
Gumroad Algorithm ranks on reviews but reviews are only counted if they have paid for your product.

It makes sense after all. No marketplace wants their platform to promote free products as that would make them no money.

As you can see product #1 The Complete Freelancing Bundle outranks product #2 SEO Side Hustle: How To Make A Living With Search (2020) due to having a higher pricing and more reviews.
Remember, not every customer leaves a review so the sales number will be much higher than this.
You can increase the number of reviews you get on platforms just by testimonial hacking.
If you use any platform like Shopify, Etsy, or Amazon, make yourself familiar with the rules and then go bonkers on them. You only need 1 loophole to make a killing.

Don’t forget about 1 thing:
Supply & Demand
When I launched my ad agency in 2017 there were very few digital ad agencies that worked with small brands (under $100k in monthly ad spend)

But I didn’t realize it at the time

Supply & Demand is an underrated concept. If everyone becomes a creator, there will be far fewer consumers.

Searches on TikTok and Instagram are getting bigger than Google.
In 5 years, Google usage might drop. It'll happen slowly, then all at once.

Met the owner of a successful ice cream shop this weekend. Instead of a loyalty punch card, every employee has to give 3x surprise 20% discounts and one 100% discount per shift. Genius. 🍦
