The Taylor Swift Effect

1. Taylor Swift's Viral Video That Started It All

On April 19th 2024, Taylor Swift wore Popflex's lilac Pirouette Skort in a YouTube Shorts video, causing an immediate surge in sales.

@taylorswiftstyled posted about it on 20th April 2024 on Instagram.

The skort sold out within 15 minutes of @taylorswiftstyled posting about it resulting in Popflex's biggest sales day of the year.

2. Adapting to Meet Demand

To keep up with the overwhelming demand, Popflex founder Cassey Ho made the unusual decision to allow pre-orders.

They never allow pre-orders but the Taylor Swift effect was too hard to resist.

This move paid off, with over 10,000 skorts pre-ordered to date.

3. Tapping Into the Swifties

For those out of the loop, Swifties are Taylor Swift's Fans.

Cassey Ho capitalized on the Taylor Swift hype by adding "(Cassey's Version)" to the skort's product name, a nod to Swift's rerecorded albums.

She also added a relevant lyric "Lilac short skirt, the one that fits me like skin." from Swift's new song "imgonnagetyouback" to the skort's description.

It shows that a single mega influencer can change a small businesses trajectory.

In the end, Popflex got the Taylor Swift stamp.

Docusign is a successful application of this principle.

TikTok Shops is focused on cheap, impulse-buy products.

YouTube Shops is predicted to have more premium products as YouTube is still long-form king.

Think long-form VSLs like how Iman Gadzhi made $40 million from a single video.

Rabbit Holes

  1. TikTok as a Search Engine? - 80%+ of Google's revenue comes from search. Gen-Z is shifting towards social-first searching like searching on TikTok, Instagram, and even YouTube. Gen-Zs have adopted the new behavior and then everyone else will follow.

  2. How I took an API side project to over 250 million daily requests with a $0 marketing budget - You don't need a massive budget when you market the product right in front of the buyers with buying intent.

  3. Disney+ winning messaging - Disney+’s rapid growth is mostly due to the small messaging tweaks.
